High Roads

Giuliana Racco / ArtBo Weekend (April 12–25, 2024)

Born in Toronto and based in the Mediterranean region, she has worked in the Middle East and Asia, North and South America, and Europe, teaching at universities and in experimental programs. Her videos, photographs, installations, and drawings have been exhibited in international museums and foundations. She is a Ph.D. candidate studying Border Aesthetics at York University in Toronto.

High Roads is a journey through overlapping narratives about the paradoxical conditions of the quest for well-being in occupied Palestine. Filmed between Palestine and Barcelona, High Roads features conversations with physicist Dr. Wafaa Khater, Olympic swimmer Sabine Hazboun, marathon runner Diala Isid, and yoga instructor Eilda Zaghmout: four women who foster well-being and inspire wonder by defying relentless oppression. Their diverse yet interconnected practices of SUMUD (steadfastness) in this fragmented non-state offer a glimpse into the many ways in which Palestinians (both refugees and non-refugees) strive to “live well,” using their bodies, their breath, and their minds as tools for everyday resistance to military occupation.
